In the reprieve between the raindrops on Saturday, July 10, Shakespeare & Company hosted its tented benefit reception on rather damp grounds in Lenox, Mass. Following the period of robust hors d’oeuvres and drinks, guests made their way to The New Spruce Theatre for its inaugural production of “King Lear,” featuring Christopher Lloyd. The handsome outdoor theater, which was recently constructed — in about 90 days — has all the benefits of an open-air theater (including active bird chatter, a charming backdrop to the action) and, alas, its drawbacks. Towards the end of the first act, where already poor Cordelia has been disowned by her father, the rainclouds rolled in and action was stopped. However, the play must, and did, go on; the audience was moved into the Tina Packer Playhouse to finish out the performance.
