Mean Girls-Meets-Agatha Christie Mystery: "Dead Girl's Quinceañera" Opens at Barrington Stage

Barrington Stage Company opens the world premiere of "Dead Girl's Quinceañera" on August 9. Written by Phanésia Pharel and directed by Melia Bensussen, the show is a co-production with Goodman Theatre and Hartford Stage—a three-theater collaboration that gives a new play unusually broad reach right out of the gate, with the production heading to Chicago's Goodman for a run this fall after closing in Pittsfield.

The play features Maria, who goes missing from her own quinceañera. Nineteen hours pass without a response to any messages. Her three best friends, armed with confidence, questionable clues, and zero adult supervision, take the case into their own hands—interrogating suspects, inventing theories, and roasting each other along the way.

Pharel has described the pitch as Latina "Mean Girls" meets Agatha Christie: a dark comedy about true-crime obsession, teenage bravado, and what happens when girls stop waiting for adults to give them answers.

Pharel is a Haitian American playwright and screenwriter raised on a dragon fruit farm in Miami, the daughter of an immigrant teacher and farmer. She made her Off-Broadway debut earlier this year with "The Waterfall" at WP Theater, which won the Kennedy Center's Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award in 2024. "Dead Girl's Quinceañera" was developed with the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's National Playwrights Conference, often called the launchpad of American theater, as well as the New Harmony Project, the Playwrights' Center, and several other new-work incubators. Pharel has said she wrote the play for her own best friend, to celebrate how the relationship changed her life, and has been struck by how the coming-of-age story has resonated with audiences who've never been to Miami or aren't of Hispanic descent. She's currently the incoming Playwriting Fellow at Emory University, where she'll teach and develop a new play through 2027.

Director Melia Bensussen, a Brown University graduate who serves on the Arts Advisory Board for the Princess Grace Foundation, leads the production's ensemble cast in its Barrington Stage run. Barrington Stage's New Works Series, which developed this production, is sponsored by Roxanne & Scott Bok.
