The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge has named Graham C. Boettcher, PhD, as its new director and CEO. A Yale-educated art historian and experienced museum executive, Boettcher comes to the Berkshires following a 20-year tenure at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama, where he has served as director and CEO since 2017.
Boettcher succeeds Laurie Norton Moffatt, who is retiring this summer after more than 40 years leading the institution. Under her tenure, the museum grew from a regional museum into a nationally recognized center for American illustration, expanding its collections, preserving Norman Rockwell's archive and studio, and ensuring the artist’s presence in the firmament of American artistic iconography.

"Laurie has left an indelible mark over the course of her career on not only NRM, but on the nation's museum profession, and the entire field of illustration art," says Dolf Berle, chair and president of the Board of Trustees, who led the nationwide search for her replacement.
NRM leadership say they were impressed how, at the Birmingham Museum of Art, Boettcher expanded partnerships across the city and region, secured significant funding for deferred maintenance and accessibility improvements, and oversaw major collection gifts and endowments. The board noted that his experience in capital planning will be particularly valuable as the Norman Rockwell Museum pursues its own goals at the site.
A specialist in narrative art and American illustration, Boettcher has spent much of his career exploring how visual storytelling shapes civic values and national identity. In 2012 he curated the Birmingham presentation of “Norman Rockwell's America” and organized companion exhibitions connecting Rockwell to American commercial and popular culture.
"Illustration is 'the people's art,' providing a critical lens through which we might better understand our nation's ideals, aspirations, and contradictions," Boettcher says. "As an artist responding to a period of rapid social, political, and technological change, Rockwell's work is more relevant than ever."
The Norman Rockwell Museum has increasingly positioned itself as a platform for civic dialogue, and Boettcher appears prepared to build on that direction.
"Norman Rockwell Museum occupies a singular place in the American landscape," he says. "With its rich and iconic collections, the Museum is uniquely positioned to play a significant role in fostering civic dialogue on a national level, and I'm excited to join in that important work."
Boettcher spent 11 years in New England earlier in his career and says he is looking forward to returning to the region.
"The Berkshires' extraordinary concentration of arts institutions provides a space rife with possibilities for unique and meaningful collaborations," he says.
Boettcher officially assumes his role on August 31.
