Tangent Theatre Brings "Lobby Hero" to the Grace Note

Tangent Theatre Company, the Tivoli-based company that pops up in venues around the region, brings a staged reading of Kenneth Lonergan's "Lobby Hero" to the Grace Note at the Stissing Center on July 24. The reading is free, though donations are welcome, and reservations are required—email info@tangent-arts.org to reserve your spot.

"Lobby Hero" premiered off-Broadway in 2001 and was revived on Broadway in 2018 with Chris Evans, Michael Cera, Brian Tyree Henry, and Laurie Metcalf in a production that introduced it to a new generation. The setup is a Manhattan apartment building lobby, late at night, where two security guards and two police officers are testing their principles across a series of shifts. The questions it raises—about loyalty, authority, complicity, and what it actually means to do the right thing when the right thing costs you something—haven't dated.

Lonergan is best known for the Academy Award-winning screenplay for "Manchester by the Sea," and also wrote and directed "You Can Count on Me" and co-wrote "Gangs of New York." His plays, including "This Is Our Youth" and "The Waverly Gallery," center around ordinary people under ethical pressure.

The cast for this reading includes Sam Eisenbaum, Devin T. Gibbs, Michael Rhodes, and Jessie Zarrelli, directed by Christine Crawfis. Steven Young reads stage directions. Doors open at 6:30pm.
