Taylor Ashton makes his Stissing Center debut on May 16, and if you don't know him yet this is a good way to fix that. The Vancouver-born, Brooklyn-based songwriter spent his late teens and twenties as the frontman of Fish & Bird, a five-piece the Vancouver Folk Festival called "Canada's most unique folk-rock ensemble." He released four albums with the band, toured Canada, the US, and the UK heavily, then moved to Brooklyn in 2015 and started over, busking in the subway on clawhammer banjo to make ends meet.

He survived those early New York years by working as an illustrator, an audiobook narrator, and a songwriting teacher, and was even hired by the New York Times to write a song about the debt-ridden subway system.

He wrote over 400 songs in New York City. His 2018 duo album with Courtney Hartman, Been On Your Side, earned praise from Rolling Stone, and his 2020 solo debut The Romantic brought him wider attention and touring slots with Aoife O'Donovan, Sarah Jarosz, and The Wood Brothers. His most recent album, Stranger to the Feeling, was recorded over a 4,000-mile cross-country road trip and features collaborators including his wife Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive, Big Thief's Buck Meek, and Vulfpeck's Theo Katzman.

His live shows are by all accounts something different from the records — funny, unpredictable, and intimate in the way that the best small-room folk shows can be.
