It was hard to believe that a summer storm had nearly vanquished the gathering mere minutes before the start of PS21’s gala in Chatham on Friday, June 21. Following cocktails and a farm-to-table dinner under the big tent,, guests filed into the theater for a preview performance of "Noli Timere," a gravity-defying modern dance performance created by Rebecca Glazier, Janet Echelman, and Jorane. The piece’s title is taken from the Latin for “do not be afraid” and not only informs its spirit but is also an adroit metaphor for this performing arts center’s guiding principles (as well as attendants’ commitment come rain or shine).

In her remarks, Executive and Artistic Director Elena Siyanko exhorted everyone to “not be afraid,” stating that it is perhaps the most important thing in life, not just for artists. Siyanko expanded on this idea to encompass PS21’s courage in hosting live performances during the uncertain days of 2020, as well as the fearlessness of their guests who arrive with open minds to embrace new forms of expression. Such audiences include participants in PS21's benevolent PATHWAYS program, where visiting visionaries engage closely with the surrounding community in a mutually beneficial artistic experience at low or no cost to either party.
