Ben Folds plays the Mahaiwe on Friday night with just himself and a piano—no band, no setlist, and reportedly no two shows the same. Folds has been touring in this format for years alongside his orchestral dates. In this solo setting he's reportedly looser, funnier, and more improvisational, with room for requests and audience participation that a full production doesn't allow.
Folds built his name in the 1990s as the frontman of Ben Folds Five, the trio that produced "Brick," "Song for the Dumped," and "Battle of Who Could Care Less" before breaking up and then reuniting at intervals. His solo catalog has continued the combination of piano-driven pop craftsmanship and sardonic wit that defined the band, and he has spent the past two decades also conducting symphonies and serving as a judge on NBC's "Sing Off." An Emmy nomination followed.
