February 28 | Van Buren Hall, Kinderhook, NY | 3pm
The 16th season of Concerts in the Village continues on February 28 with “Soulmates,” a program devoted to the intertwined artistic and personal lives of Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, and Johannes Brahms.
Performed at Van Buren Hall in Kinderhook, the afternoon concert brings together soprano Amanda Boyd (pictured), pianist Michael Clement, violinist Mitsuko Suzuki, and horn player Victor Sungarian—musicians familiar to regional audiences.
Boyd and Clement will present Clara Wieck Schumann’s "6 Lieder, Op. 13," foregrounding her often-overlooked contributions as a composer alongside her celebrated career as a pianist.
Robert Schumann is represented by the "Fantasie in C, Op. 17," a sweeping and emotionally charged piano work that stands among the most demanding in the repertoire, both technically and interpretively.
The concert concludes with Brahms’s "Horn Trio in E-flat major, Op. 40," performed by Clement, Suzuki, and Sungarian. Composed in 1865, the trio reflects the deep artistic bond that formed when the young Brahms sought out Robert and Clara in 1853—a relationship that would shape all three musicians’ creative trajectories.
Artistic Director David Smith notes that beyond celebrating compositional genius, the program invites listeners to reflect on the essential role of human relationships in nurturing artistic creativity.
The concert takes place at Van Buren Hall, 6 Chatham Street, Kinderhook (lift available). Suggested contribution is $25; students and children are admitted free. Reservations and further information are available at concertsinthevillage.org.
