A tree fell in the woods… not the normal way to start a party report. But because that tree fell, the Greenwoods Counseling Referrals' “Cocktail Party with a Twist” on Saturday, June 15 at the Whatworks Social House in Bethlehem, Conn. began sans electric power. Still, the Hot Club of Blackrock jazz trio played on, drinks got poured and guests milled around the gorgeous garden. Until it started raining. Inside, they gathered around the glow of lantern light as Greenwoods Executive Director John Simoncelli explained that when people who struggle with mental health and addiction issues don’t know where to turn, Greenwoods helps by connecting them to quality mental healthcare. It’s the only mental health referral service in Connecticut that provides personalized connections to counselors, therapists or other professionals, and has also partnered with local public schools to connect students to mental health services, even making financial assistance available. The need is great, and guests were generous in offering their contributions on the spot. It was a dancing crowd; lights or no lights (power did eventually return), they moved to the R&B tunes provided by Kenny Hamber and his band.
