James Autery's "sheet" at Tanja Grunert Gallery
A video artist who films train hoppers and everyday moments, projects onto cotton fabric for a new show pairing his work with the gallery's "tANJA's Living Room" series.

Tanja Grunert Gallery opens a show pairing filmmaker James Autery with the gallery's ongoing "tANJA's Living Room" project on August 29. The centerpiece is Autery's "sheet" (2025), a digital video projection onto a cotton bedsheet.
Autery's work documentary, experimental film, and observational practice in one. He started photographing and developing film in a darkroom as a high schooler, studied photojournalism at the University of Missouri–Columbia, and was a finalist in the 2006 Gordon Parks International Photo Competition before dropping out to spend two years documenting train hoppers.
He became a full-time freelance photographer and video artist in 2014, made a mini-documentary that year on Project Prakash's research into predictive abilities in children with autism, and began filming for Time in 2017. During a three-year artist residency with Second Ward Foundation he produced "Mantra," a 46-minute experimental documentary about the meditative act of making art, and has since become a two-time Media Arts Assistance Fund grantee (2020 and 2025).
