On August 29, Hollister House Garden hosts "Designing Fall Containers: Bold Texture and Seasonal Color," a talk by designer Beth Crowell on moving pots and planters from summer into autumn without simply swapping out tired annuals for mums.

Crowell will cover the technical and artistic principles behind professional fall container design—container preparation, soil improvement, and selecting cold-tolerant plants that hold up as temperatures drop and light decreases—using examples to show how structure, plant placement, texture, form, and color work together. Attendees leave with practical design strategies, a list of top-performing fall plants, and a better sense of how professionals build containers that keep evolving rather than peaking once and fading.

Crowell earned a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography and spent 25 years running a graphic design firm with her husband, Mark Cheung, before the couple pivoted to landscape work. For the past 15 years they've operated a design-build business focused on small-scale landscape and garden design, garden management, and container plantings.

Today they own Meadow Rue Gardens, a boutique cut-flower farm in Litchfield, where Crowell is known for her bouquets and floral arrangements alongside her landscape consulting. She's currently pursuing an advanced certificate in Native Plant Studies with the Native Plant Trust and is part of Connecticut's Master Woodland Manager Program cohort.
