On Saturday, October 18, the Literacy Network (LitNet) celebrated its mission of transforming lives through education and advocacy with a night filled with food, drinks, speeches, and dancing at Bousquet Mountain. The event honored the Masiero family of Guido’s Fresh Marketplace and was themed “Generation to Generation: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.”
Matt Masiero, who opened the original Guido’s with his brother Chris in 1979, spoke of Guido’s humble beginnings, and Anna Masiero, representing the second generation of Guido’s owners, spoke about the significance of keeping Guido’s a family-run business. Two of LitNet’s English language learners, Jorge Millan and Sandra Zarate, both originally from Colombia and both current employees at Guido’s, spoke of their decisions to emigrate to be with family or give their children more opportunities, and their LitNet tutors, Marc Hurel and Barry Shapiro (respectively), spoke of each learner’s dedication and extraordinary hard work in learning English.
Guests enjoyed a buffet dinner of authentic Colombian cuisine, catered by Miguel Gomez of La Fogata Restaurant. The event raised vital operating funds to support its free educational programming. LitNet serves about 350 adults each year, the vast majority being immigrants keen on learning or improving their English.
