"Re-scripting" Celebrate's the Beauty of Words as Part of Rough Notes Fest
Six artists use collage, painting, sculpture, and vinyl to fold written language into visual art.

September Gallery opens "RE-SCRIPTING" on August 29, part of the gallery's ongoing "SEPTEMBER SOMETIMES" series and timed to coincide with the inaugural Rough Notes Literary Festival, founded and organized by Kinderhook Books. The show brings together Mara Baldwin, Jane Bustin, Nicole Cherubini, Taylor Davis, Shanekia McIntosh, and Cauleen Smith—six artists whose work incorporates written language across collage, painting, sculpture, and vinyl, drawing on literature, poetry, and film.
Bustin's contribution, "While My Hands Tremble" (2023), gives a sense of the show's approach: an 1890 edition of "Aurora Leigh" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning combined with block print, ink, and a ceramic Raku bowl—text treated as raw material.
Smith is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and writer working across experimental cinema, installation, sculpture, and text, her three-decade practice has explored Black cultural histories, spirituality, science fiction, and social justice, often centering the lives and creative legacies of Black artists, musicians, and visionaries to construct alternative narratives against dominant histories. Her 1998 feature "Drylongso," shot while she was in graduate school at UCLA, won acclaim at Sundance and received a 4K restoration and Criterion Collection rerelease in 2023. She's held solo exhibitions at MASS MoCA, Philadelphia's Institute of Contemporary Art, and LA's Museum of Contemporary Art, and has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Heinz Award, and the inaugural Ellsworth Kelly Award from the Foundation for Contemporary Art.
