The interior design is out of control at this restored early-19th-century house set along one the Hudson River at 886 Rout 9J in Stuyvesant. Built around 1820 the home was recently the subject of a four-year, full-scale renovation completed in 2023. the styling was done in collaboration with famed interior designer Nick Spain.

At 1,722 square feet, the layout is compact but carefully composed, with three bedrooms and two baths arranged around a traditional center-hall plan. What distinguishes the house is the level of finish: original elements—wide plank floors, chestnut ceiling beams, moldings, and an early fireplace—have been restored rather than replaced, while new work introduces a sharper, more contemporary edge.

The kitchen anchors the first floor, built around a large soapstone island and framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that open the house to its estuary landscape. A butler’s pantry, professional-grade appliances, and updated systems bring the house fully into present use.

A living room organized around symmetry and light, a dining room with a wood stove, and a first-floor bath that introduces concrete finishes and modern fixtures create a dialogue between historic and contemporary materials. Upstairs, bedrooms are simple and bright, with cross-ventilation, exposed structure, and a primary suite that incorporates a more fully realized modern bath.

The exterior has been restored with equal attention. The cedar facade, chimneys, roof, and systems have all been rebuilt or replaced, and new infrastructure, including a 400-amp electrical system, generator, and updated septic. It's a turnkey property, not the preservation project so many structures like this tend to be.

886 New Street #9J, Stuyvesant is listed for $810,000 by John Oliveira and Jonathan R. Stein at Douglas Elliman Real Estate.
