"Proclamation" by Cindy O'Connor.

The new year opens at Sherman Library with a photography exhibition that brings local history into sharp, human focus. From January 9 through February 18, 2026, the library presents a juried selection of images documenting the Sherman Historical Society’s large-scale Revolutionary War reenactment, held in September as part of the organization’s 50th anniversary.

"Marksman in the Forest" by Jane Haslam.

Shot during a day-long living history event that drew more than 500 visitors, the photographs capture clouds of musket smoke, tightly choreographed drills, and quieter moments among colonial villagers cooking, sewing, and practicing period medicine. Reenactors from the 5th Connecticut Regiment, Ye Olde Lebanon Towne Militia Company, and the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot populate the frame, captured by members of the Great Hollow Photographers Club, which sponsored the project and invited photographers to document the event.

The exhibition features work by twelve photographers—Dee Biglin, Lynne Gomez, Irit Granger, Jane Haslam, Mike Mondaruli, Cindy O’Connor, Helen Anne Ostrosky, Masumi O’Donnell, Roderike Pohl, Sandy Schill, Doris Tomaselli, and Adeline Wolgast—along with a portrait book of individual reenactors created by John and Masumi O’Donnell.
