For more than four decades, Paul Rich & Sons has evolved alongside the homes it furnishes. What began as a traditional furniture store has steadily grown into a full-scale home furnishings destination, offering everything from sofas and dining tables to rugs, mattresses, outdoor furniture, and interior design services. That evolution, owners Tom and Pam Rich say, mirrors how people actually live now—mixing styles, investing in pieces meant to be used every day, and prioritizing comfort that lasts.

Few brands capture that philosophy as clearly as Stressless, the Norwegian-made seating line that has become a cornerstone of the Paul Rich & Sons showroom in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The Riches first brought Stressless into the store roughly 35 years ago, when Scandinavian design was still a tough sell in a largely traditional retail environment. They took a chance, placed a small group of chairs in the middle of the showroom—and watched customers respond almost immediately.
“The moment people sat in them, that was it,” Tom Rich says. “They didn’t want to get up.”
Developed in Norway in the early 1970s, Stressless seating is engineered around the body’s natural movements, using patented ergonomic systems that support the head, neck, and lower back while allowing users to adjust and hold their preferred position. The result is a kind of firm, responsive comfort—supportive rather than soft—that reveals itself over time. Customers often linger, coats off, settling in long enough to understand how the chair actually feels.

That experience is central to how Paul Rich & Sons sells the line. The Pittsfield showroom devotes roughly 5,000 square feet to Stressless alone, with hundreds of chairs on display in multiple styles, sizes, leathers, and wood finishes, alongside sofas and sectionals for media rooms and living spaces. Most chairs are available in three sizes, allowing couples to choose identical styles tailored precisely to each person’s height and build.
Stressless durability is another major draw. The chairs are predominantly leather, with different grades focused on feel rather than longevity. “Our least expensive leather wears just as well as our most expensive,” Tom Rich notes. Customers regularly replace chairs purchased decades earlier—or simply update components—because the underlying structure and motion system have held up.
While Paul Rich & Sons stocks a deep inventory, many customers choose to special-order, selecting exact combinations of model, leather, and wood. Thanks to Stressless’s US stocking program, popular configurations typically arrive within two to three weeks, while in-stock pieces can often be delivered immediately.

Though based in Pittsfield, the store serves a wide regional audience. Paul Rich & Sons ships throughout the Berkshires and Columbia County and regularly delivers as far as New York City and Boston, as well as Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Delivery is handled by the company’s own dedicated crew, extending the same care customers experience in the showroom directly into their homes.
For many city-based clients—especially second-home owners who have become full-time Berkshire residents—that combination of space, selection, and personal service is part of the appeal. “People like coming here,” Pam Rich says. “They can park easily, take their time, try everything, and then we’ll deliver it to them ourselves.”
At Paul Rich & Sons, comfort isn’t a buzzword. It’s something you’re invited to sit with for a while—and decide for yourself.
