The Attic: A Modern Lair For Reusable And Sustainable Goods
Just above the Berkshire Co-op, The Attic focuses on products that are good for you and good for the environment.

You heard it here first: Bread boxes are making a comeback.
At least that’s the impression I got when visiting The Attic, the new sustainable kitchen and home goods shop in Great Barrington. An offshoot of the Berkshire Food Co-op, it sits right above the Co-op (accessible by elevator), a modern version of a mercantile that sells artisanal goods, household items, and gifts, with an emphasis on non-plastic, reusable solutions to all those things we do and need in the kitchen and rest of the home.
Big sellers, I’m told, are the stainless steel food storage containers, of which there are many shapes and sizes, and which are as handsome as they are waste free. Ditto the bamboo bowls, the bags, and the really adorable training chopsticks. Then there are the bread boxes, which I couldn’t look at it because they’d sold out. Home breadmaking much?
Artisanal products include pottery from Lorimer Burns Ceramics out of Housatonic, and Patsy Cowen Ceramics from Sheffield. The long stretch of countertop is a live edge slab of jatoba tree wood — from one tree! — crafted by Berkshire Wood Products.

Candles, greeting cards, and jewelry are the gifty-type items that belong more in a separate shop than the Co-op downstairs, says Devorah Sawyer, the Co-ops marketing manager. Despite ithe Co-op's massive renovation a few years back, the kitchen products were beginning to take up too much real estate, and the decision was made to create an area for the non-food items. A dedicated space would also allow the Co-op to add to its product line and take requests from customers.
While the interior of the shop is contemporary, with exposed ducts and recessed lighting, the furniture (and The Attic font) lend an old-timey feel. The cabinets are antiques and are for sell if you need a place to store your new, environmentally friendly food containers.
And bread box.
