The Dean House: A 1735 Colonial With Three Names, on 11 Acres in Cannan
Built before it's town was incorporated, expanded in 1804, and known across its nearly 300-year history as the Dean House, the Horsford Homestead, and the Howe’s Home—5 fireplaces, a barn, a pool, and a 1,700-square-foot in-law apartment.
The town of Canaan was incorporated in 1739. The house at 167 Beebe Hill Road predates all of that by three years. Built in 1735, it has accumulated three names—the Dean House, the Horsford Homestead, the Howe’s Home— which trace successive generations of the families who shaped the early settlement of the Northwest Corner. The Horsfords were among the earliest proprietors of Canaan; David and John Horsford appear in the genealogical records of the town’s founding generation. A major two-story addition was completed in 1804, the same year the South Canaan Congregational Church went up at the center of the old town, expanding the footprint to 6,034 square feet while preserving the original structure within it.
What’s survived is living history. Original fireplaces—5 of them, distributed across the dining room and principal rooms—retain their period paneling and surround. Original trim, flooring, doors, and moldings are prevalent throughout. The structural bones are visible in the attic and basement, intact. Wide, spacious rooms move through the house alongside smaller, more intimate spaces. The bathrooms have been updated and the appliances are newer. There is radiant heat, central air, central vacuum, and a generator.
Outside, the 11.64 acres include a kidney-shaped in-ground pool, a large flat lawn that once served as a full-sized English croquet court, gardens, a gazebo, and a large old barn with additional small outbuildings. A newer structure from 1997 holds a two-car garage, a substantial studio and workshop, a storage room, and a roughly 1,700-square-foot in-law apartment on the second floor.
The Great Falls on the Housatonic are close, as are Music Mountain and the Old Riverton Inn.
