"This evening is all about the students, and form them," said Liz Neumark, founder of The Sylvia Center and Katchkie Farm. Considering the recent  weather, it was almost a miracle that the annual farm-to-table dinner in support of The Sylvia Center wasn’t disturbed by a raging storm. Yet, said Neumark, in the 15 years they’ve held the fundraiser on the grounds of Katchkie Farm in Kinderhook, the event has never been rained out. Prior to remarks and dinner, students from the Philmont Coop partnership prepared delicious bites, and the Teen Culinary Apprentice alumni fired up the pizza oven and got creative with the toppings. In a “hybrid” version of the long tables under the tent and the Covid-era picnics in the field, the picnic under the tent, with food provided by Great Performances, continued the tradition of celebrating and raising money for The Sylvia Center’s programs, which educate young people on the connection between food and health. In its 15-year history, said Executive Director Barbara Glassman, The Sylvia Center has served 38,000 youths in New York City and the Hudson Valley. Recently, the organization has expanded into the Capital District and brought its programming to ever younger students, because even three-year-olds can learn to explore new foods.
