Natalia Zukerman is a touring singer/songwriter, painter and muralist with strong ties to the Rural Intelligence region. A slide guitar, lap steel and dobro player, she has released six albums since 2001, showcasing her own blend of “rootsy, Americana blues folk." She will be performing with double bassist Zacharia Hickman at MASS MoCA this Saturday, June 6 at 8 p.m. Take one glance at her packed touring schedule and you'll understand why a visit to the area is her time to retreat and recharge. I grew up in New York City, and lived in different places, but also lived in the Hudson Valley for almost a year before moving back to Brooklyn, so this is definitely a home of mine. My stepfather is a gentleman farmer of sorts and I lived in his barn that year, which was the greatest thing. I like to help him with the farm when I visit. There’s nothing like putting your hands in the dirt as an antidote to living in the city. I haven’t gotten really involved in the music and art scene here, although I know there’s a lot of really good stuff going on. I have played at the Ancram Opera House and at Simon’s Rock with the singer-songwriter Meg Hutchinson, who is from the Berkshires. This region is heaven. I went on the Rail Trail last weekend and ran for 10 miles (I’m preparing for a half marathon). I went through swamps and passed a vineyard — it was a gorgeous outdoor adventure. I like to go to Kripalu, and one of my favorite restaurants is Rouge in West Stockbridge. The owner, Maggie Merelle, is a friend of mine. And, of course, Tanglewood is amazing. I’m really excited to be playing at MASS MoCA. Zachariah Hickman is so fun to play with and we’re just going to be singing duets all night.
