Since its 2006 world premiere at Luna Stage in Montclair, NJ, The Whipping Man, by young playwright Matthew Lopez, has been widely produced and well received. It's the story of a seriously wounded Jewish Confederate officer who returns from the Civil War to find his Virginia home in ruins and abandoned except for his family's two newly freed former slaves who were raised in the Jewish faith—one who tended him during his youth and one who grew up alongside him. The three men contend with their new relationship as they hold a Seder, await the family's return, and confront challenging questions of rights, liberty, responsibility, faith, and secrets of the past. Company stalwart Christopher Innvar, usually seen onstage rather than behind the scenes, makes his second directorial outing at BSC with this production, which stars Broadway and television veterans Clarke Peters (featured in HBO's in HBo's Treme and The Wire), LeRoy McClain, and Nick Westrate.
