Rural Intelligence’s archives show that our first mention of WAM (Women’s Action Movement) Theatre was in 2012, three years after it was founded by Kristen van Ginhoven (along with Leigh Strimbeck). Since then, we’ve covered many of the theater’s events and performances and, more importantly, the stellar work that van Ginhoven has done to create and produce works that put the spotlight on women playwrights, directors, and actors. An activist organization, WAM donates a portion of the box proceeds to an organization that benefits women worldwide. After 14 years growing the organization — and more than $100,000 raised — van Ginhoven is stepping away from WAM to pursue other ventures. On Saturday, Nov. 4, WAM supporters gathered at actor Jayne Atkinson’s home in the Berkshires to celebrate van Ginhoven’s vision and achievements. Although a new artistic director has yet to be named, van Ginhoven told her admirers that she felt she was able to leave WAM with confidence that the theater would continue to be successful, and she encouraged the group to welcome and support whoever the next artistic director may be. Rural Intelligence offers its kudos and best wishes to Kristen, wherever her next adventure takes her.
