Even as winter loosens its grip on southern Berkshire County, many residents still face the harsh reality of choosing between heating their homes and other essential needs. In response, Construct—a nonprofit dedicated to affordable housing and supportive services—has been undertaking its 18th annual "Warm Up the Winter" campaign, aiming to raise $150,000 to provide emergency assistance for fuel, utilities, and shelter. The campaign will culminate in a benefit concert on March 6, at The Guthrie Center in Great Barrington, featuring local talents such as Wanda Houston and Jeff Gonzales in Big and Bigger, and youth Elvis tribute band Made in Memphis. The funds raised will directly support households in southern Berkshire County, offering critical aid during the most challenging months.

Jane Ralph, Executive Director of Construct, emphasizes the urgency: "We've already experienced a colder and snowier winter than in recent years. Folks must now buy at least 150 gallons of fuel for most companies to come out. We know people will have to choose between heat and prescription medicines or food—choices no one should make."

Construct has been active in the southern Berkshires for over 50 years, providing more than 90 permanent affordable housing units and transitional programs for individuals emerging from homelessness. Their comprehensive approach addresses immediate needs while fostering long-term stability and community growth.

The necessity of such initiatives is underscored by regional statistics. According to the Berkshire Community Action Council, low-income residents in Berkshire County receive an average of $1,500 in fuel assistance, covering approximately two oil tank fill-ups—often insufficient for the entire winter season. This shortfall highlights the critical role of community-driven efforts like "Warm Up the Winter" in bridging the gap and ensuring vulnerable populations remain safe and warm.

As temperatures continue to drop, the collective effort of the community becomes paramount. By supporting Construct's "Warm Up the Winter" campaign, residents can make a tangible difference in the lives of their neighbors, ensuring that no one has to face the perilous choice between warmth and other basic necessities.
