Guests arriving at Norman Rockwell Museum's summer gala, A Night of Wonder, on Saturday, June 10, were greeted by a 30-foot, inflatable sea monster named Morton. The creature on the lawn is part of the museum’s newest exhibition, “Tony Sarg: Genius at Play,” which is on view through November 5. Sarg is known as the father of modern puppetry in North America as well as the designer of many Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade balloons, including the very first, in 1927. The magic he created through puppetry, sky-high balloons, and department store window displays set the theme for a fanciful evening in Stockbridge. Madame Emily read guests’ fortunes, Cardone the Magician performed sleight-of-hand tricks, and bartenders offered cocktails with splashes of sea water and wonder. A one-night-only performance by American composer and multi-instrumentalist Bob Telson and Friends rounded out the evening.

Many of artist Tony Sarg's marionettes currently are on display at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge.
