Fiona Breslin reports from Lenox. Turning 75 is monumental enough, but Tanglewood’s anniversary concert and gala on Saturday, July 14, was a historic event in and of itself. The evening featured performances by legendary musicians and conductors, including James Taylor, pianists Peter Serkin and Emanuel Ax, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops, and prolific composer/conductor John Williams, who presented Seiji Ozawa, in absentia, with the first-ever Tanglewood Medal to honor his years as BSO conductor. The magical evening drew an audience of more than 16,000 and raised $1.42 million, setting a record for amount raised from a single Tanglewood concert. The lawn was packed with music-lovers enjoying the concert under the stars, which culminated in a surprise fireworks display. Many of the performers, as well as their friends and supporters (including Kate Morris, Hillary Deely, and Kelley Vickery, greeting Yo-Yo Ma, left) stayed late into the night to enjoy a post-concert party and toast a successful affair, and many more Tanglewood seasons to come.
