As the sun began its descent over the Hudson River and surrounding hills on Saturday evening, July 13, guests of Bard College’s 2019 SummerScape Gala sipped cocktails on the back lawn of Montgomery Place. This year’s event was a chance for the school to honor Fisher Center co-founders and philanthropists Martin and Toni Sosnoff for their generosity. During dinner al fresco by Twisted Soul, Martin Sosnoff offered tales of growing up in New York City when a piano cost 10 dollars and an hour-long music lesson only 25 cents. Patrick Vail, a 2007 Bard graduate and star of the school’s Oklahoma! (both now on Broadway), shared his story with the crowd. The night’s co-honoree, the internationally acclaimed performer Alan Cumming, also served as the evening’s entertainment. After a touching introduction from his friend and The Good Wife co-star Julianna Margulies, Cumming performed a handful of songs, including “Taylor, The Latte Boy,” his own version of “Is That All There Is,” and a love song he wrote for his husband, who was also in attendance. An after-party at The Spiegeltent offered an upstate version of Cumming’s downtown cabaret show Club Cumming.
