Mud season in the region used to be a pretty specific few months, but global warming has confused Mother Nature, and now it seems to come and go with impunity. If you haven’t outfitted yourself with the proper footwear for traipsing around in the squelchy muck, we’ve sought out retailers across the region where you can make a beeline for quality boots. They’re sure to hold up their end of the bargain through whatever the weather throws our way.
The store on the corner of Holmes Road and Route 7 is aptly named: it carries a large selection of Bogs for men, women and kids. You can choose the classic black, or go for the camo and plaid. They range from about $50 for the kids' styles (which have handles so they’re easy for the little ones to pull on) to $190 (for camo insulated rubber hunting boots). Family Footwear also carries the LaCrosse brand for adults; these styles are priced from about $125 to $260.
Tractor Supply Company, Pittsfield, Great Barrington, Hudson, New Milford
The largest rural lifestyle retailer in the country, Tractor Supply Company stocks boots from the trademarked Muck Boot Company. The women’s insulated mid boot, on sale now for $99.99, is suitable, says Tractor Supply, for “whether you are in the garden, running errands, or walking the dog.” But there are of course many versions of tall “wetland” boots and a wide range of styles for both men and women, priced from around $82 to $190.

“Browse women’s boots at Orivs and give your sneakers a rest,” says Orvis. Indeed. The vaunted high-end store offers Wellie-style boots from Dubarry of Ireland. The signature Galway runs $479 for both men and women. Though they’re titled hunting boots, they’re 100% waterproof, with breathable leather uppers. The other brand in store, LeCharmeau, offers leather-lined, rubber hunting boots, $499.

Perhaps the most stylish of the brands is Bos. & Co., that "women like because they're fully waterproof without looking like it," a salesperson at the store relates. One of the most popular boot at Pegasus: the Bos. & Co. Goose Primaloft® Waterproof Boiled Wool Mid Calf Boot. What you first notice is the leather upper, lugged platform sole and the lace-up back (there's a side zipper too), but on the inside, a merino wool lining adds comfort and warmth, $299.
