The clouds are parting, and down a long driveway waits Filston, at 138 Amenia Road in Sharon, Connecticut. This mansion is spooky—we’re not going to beat around the bush here—but it’s a knockout.
This 1903 Neoclassical mansion on 106 acres was designed by architect William Cromwell, Jr. for Mr. and Mrs. Romulus Colgate, and no detail has been spared. It’s a well-preserved example of Italianate Renaissance Revival, Palladian, Neo-Gothic, and French Empire architecture, with molded ceilings, pocket doors, elegant wood paneling and millwork, and a sweeping, wide staircase flanked by a stone statue of some kind of creature with a human head. It’s got 12,057 square feet, with nine bedrooms and eight bathrooms, plus a 5,700-square-foot carriage house for guests.
The house and estate have been updated in important ways like new wiring and buried power lines, a commercial-grade generator, a new propane furnace, updated plumbing, and a standing restoration of the historic landscape. The property has its own equestrian trails and private formal gardens, including a definitely-not-haunted overgrown stone wall and courtyard.
138 Amenia Road is listed for $7,500,000 by Dan Kessler at Compass Connecticut, LLC.
