Kick off the holiday weekend with a spin on the Berkshire Carousel—this beloved downtown Pittsfield attraction opens at noon on November 28, offering free rides sponsored by Lipton Energy. The carousel is the first hand-carved wooden carousel built in Massachusetts in over a century; it began as a grassroots dream launched in 2005 by resident and businessman Jim Shulman and his wife Jackie, who rallied hundreds of volunteers to bring the vision to life. Over the following years, more than 400 volunteers—many of them first-time wood carvers—learned the art of carving and painting carousel horses and chariots.
The carousel usually costs $2 per ride, so this is a chance to get on for nothing. The nonprofit that operates the merry-go-round also sells a passport book, which can be stamped after a ride on each unique horse and/or carriage.
