Deep in the woods of Becket, Jacob’s Pillow Dance almost feels like a secret… except for the award-winning international talent that it attracts and the ardent fans who return year after year. The annual opening night gala, held this year on Saturday evening, June 15, serves as a reminder of what the Pillow does best: honors the past, funds the future, serves as an incubator for creative collaboration, and brings people together. The night began outdoors with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and pop-up performances from Wild Rhythm. Inside the Ted Shawn Theatre, guests were treated to a performance by The School at Jacob’s Pillow choreographed by Matthew Neenan, a world premiere by Trey McIntyre created especially for the occasion, and the presentation of this year’s Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award to choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Two dancers from Ballet Austin performed her work Symbiotic Twin, and Caleb Teicher & Company closed the performance part of the evening with the high-energy tap piece Bzzz. A sit-down dinner and dancing to the music of the Silver Arrow Band closed out the night’s festivities.
