Saturday, October 24, 5:30pm and 8:30pm | Great Barrington, MA
Jazz singer Kate Kortum brings her quartet to the Mahaiwe’s Indigo Room for two shows on October 24, at 5:30 and 8:30pm. The Mahaiwe describes her as combining the intimacy and storytelling of cabaret with vocals that echo Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, and says what sets her apart is a “knowing, sly playfulness” and a distinctly modern female perspective on classic jazz and swing tunes, most written by men generations ago.
Kortum grew up in Houston, studied at the city’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and earned a jazz voice degree at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and a master’s from the Juilliard School. She now lives in Harlem. Her debut album, Good Woman, came out in 2023, followed by Wild Woman in 2025. She has played Birdland, the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, toured internationally, and worked with Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Bryan Carter, and Peter Bernstein.
Indigo Room, Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, 20 Castle Street, Great Barrington, MA. Tickets at mahaiwe.org or 413-528-0100.
