Each year, the Millay Colony (not to be confused with its sister organization, the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society), offers residencies to 48 accomplished artists, composers, and writers, six per one-month session, at the property in the Austerlitz hills that, according to the wishes of the poet, who lived there for 25 years, was donated for that purpose. This year, to raise funds, the board asked former resident artists to each do a small piece for a silent auction. Although the artists knew the bidding would open at only $25, many of those who have since gone on to become the most successful, such as Julie Gross, a Millay Colony resident in 1985, gave the assignment their all (above).
