There was additional excitement to this year's garden party at Naumkeag in Stockbridge, Mass. On Saturday, July 27, the Trustees of Reservations hosted the typically lovely event overlooking the spectacular grounds of the National Historic Landmark. This year, the event was also a warm-up act for the after-dark party, open to the public, that would create a happening for New Horizon, the balloon/art installation that has traveled among various Trustees sites this summer. In the “if you build it they will come” model, droves of visitors — more than 1300 in total between the garden party and the After Dark event — witnessed New Horizon’s final event, with the balloon displaying a mesmerizing light show accompanied by the new music group Bang on a Can playing an equally hypnotic minimalist piece, Terry Riley’s In C.
