Rural Intelligence Style

Throughout the fall, the New York Botanical Garden will once again offer a selection of its popular gardening and landscape design classes on Saturdays at its satellite center at Bard College.  The inaugural one-day course, Gardening with Ornamental Grasses, is this Saturday.  As pre-registration is essential, our advice is to sign up at once with the New York Botanical Garden. Other classes to follow include, Establishing Fruit Trees in the Landscape and the later Maintaining Fruit Trees in the Landscape, Emphasizing Apples; Gardening from Scratch; Getting Started with Perennials, a two-week class.  For those seeking certification, these classes are part of the Botanical Garden’s certificate program. To set up an account (essential for all first-time students): New York Botanical Garden Registration Office; 800-322-6924 For details: Bard College30 Campus Road Annandale-on-Hudson Occasional Saturday mornings, September 26 - December 5

Inside Designer Ivy Dane’s Pattern-Filled Life
Dane’s dining room and parlor are both filled with second-hand treasures. Her Art Deco dining set has been central to multiple iterations of her home. “I’ve had this table since 1990,” says Dane. “This table has seen many a meal, many a poker game, and lots of production work.” The starburst chandelier came from a second-hand office supply store in Austin. “I bought four for $100,” she says.
