Saturday, October 24, 3pm | Amenia, NY | $20 suggested donation, children free

Saxophonist Pete Anderson leads a trio through the life and music of George Gershwin at The Smithfield Church on October 24, mixing narrative with live performance. He is joined by trumpeter Joe Boga and guitarist Matt Munisteri. The program draws on Gershwin’s work for Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, film, radio, and the concert hall, and the church lists “Rhapsody in Blue,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Summertime,” “Embraceable You,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” “Love Is Here to Stay,” and “‘S Wonderful” among the selections.

Anderson plays saxophone, clarinet, and flute and has headlined at the Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. He is on the Grammy-winning soundtrack of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, and he and his brother Will received a 2014 Drama Desk nomination for the Off-Broadway show “Le Jazz Hot.” Boga also plays with Giordano’s Nighthawks and has recorded for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Munisteri, a Brooklyn native, is known for his command of 1920s and ’30s acoustic guitar styles. He has played with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Catherine Russell, Bucky Pizzarelli, Julian Lage, and Madeleine Peyroux.

The concert is part of the church’s Bang Family Concert Series, endowed by the late Bill Bang to bring regional and international musicians to the church’s Greek Revival sanctuary. The concert is open to the public, the suggested donation is $20, and children are free. Donations support future concerts.
