The invitation said, “Show your love and support by wearing red.” The message got through, because there were red dresses, red shoes, red ties and lots of ruby sparkles at the Red Hot Dinner Dance Party for Autism on Saturday, Feb. 29. The event, held at the Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield, Mass., was hosted by the Berkshire Autism Initiative, a group of volunteers working with Autism Connections and committed to raising money and community awareness in support of local individuals and their families affected by autism. This year, funds were being raised to assemble and donate “Sensory Backpacks,” which will be made available (free of charge) for children and adults on the autism spectrum. Each backpack will contain items such as universal charging cords, various sensory objects, a weighted shoulder wrap and a fidget spinner, and will be distributed to emergency responders, restaurants, theaters and other public facilities. Following a buffet dinner, the tables were cleared, leaving a spacious dance floor for attendees to rock out to the sounds of The Heartbeats, a 12-piece dance band.
