Here’s what in store for our home-tour loving readers: An 1830s farmhouse, updated by architect Robert Venturi, outfitted in Grandma Moses fabric, sprinkled with castoffs from Oprah Winfrey and Carol Channing, fronted by a Chinoiserie façade, and wait, so much more: its owners. It takes characters like Simon Lince and Cary Leibowitz to put it all together and live so delightfully within it.

LINCEOWITZ, a combination of the couple’s names, has been featured in The World of Interiors, Upstate Diary, and most recently, a video by The New York Times. The couple are hosting an open house as a fundraiser for Time & Space Limited (TSL), Hudson’s acclaimed performance space, on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 2-5 p.m.

You may not find solar panels at LINCEOWITZ, but they are vital to TSL’s future. Its conversion to solar energy will save the space as much as $250,00 over the next 25 years, and needs to raise $75,000 by the end of 2019 when New York State solar incentives collapse.

Back to the estate. When Lince and Leibowitz met architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, their goal was not to interfere. “We asked for everything that all their other clients had rejected,” Leibowitz said.

The architects transformed the 1830s farmhouse, adding a modernist shed with floor-to-ceiling windows, neon arches, commercial vinyl flooring laid out in an Italian renaissance pattern, and a spinning Jonathan Borofsky painting from the early 1980s. There is also a 30-foot-tall façade of a pagoda erected seven feet beyond those picture windows. The Grandma Moses room (upholstered in fabric printed with the artist’s works), Carol Channing’s touring trunk and objects by other historical figures will be stops (or rather, will stop you) on the tour.

Tea, chocolates and baked goods provided by co-hosts Verdigris Tea and Talbott & Arding will accompany the homeowners’ hospitality and genial company. A delightful afternoon, to be sure — and one that will help to guarantee a sustainable stream of arthouse films, live theater, global broadcasts, and community outreach well into the future.
