The setting was breathtaking (historic Elm Court in Lenox, Mass.); the high tea, lavish and scrumptious; the day bright enough to require the sun umbrellas supplied for guests But the most indelible moments from the Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires Summer Garden Party were the remarks made by VIM’s executive editor, Ilana Steinhauer, who cited specific, heart-rending instances of how the organization has provided access to free, comprehensive health care for regional residents who are income-qualified and uninsured or underinsured. What makes the nonprofit even more remarkable is the fact that patients are treated and serviced by volunteers, from the doctors to the drivers. In the past year, volunteers have provided 10,000 hours of service. But private support is vital, as VIM provides not only free comprehensive medical care, but also cash assistance for shelter, childcare and other needs to support patients. “VIM has saved lives, changed lives, and created hope,” Steinhauer told the guests. “This impact was yours.” The event was co-sponsored by Berkshire Property Agents, listing agents for Elm Court (a steal at $12,500,000) to offer guests an insider look at the property.
