The David M. Hunt Library opens "The Engineering of Art," a show by Falls Village artist Sergei Fedorjaczenko. Every painting and sculpture in the exhibition is built only from the circle, the square, and the triangle. Fedorjaczenko, who has installed all of the library's "ArtWall" exhibitions since 2011, took his cue from the Bauhaus school, and spent the past year on the series.
His interest in precision comes from decades as an industrial designer. he's designed toys, interiors, appliances, switches, and cosmetics packaging, and holds several patents. After retiring he moved to Falls Village to restore a 1730 farmhouse and began making his own work, painting in oil, acrylic, and watercolor and sculpting in wood, metal, and plastic. His process usually begins with a visual goal and the question, “Can I do this and how?” He likes a Picasso line: “I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”
Saturday’s reception gives visitors a chance to meet the artist and see the whole show. On November 19, Fedorjaczenko returns for a longer conversation about his process, influences, and the geometric limits he set himself. All proceeds from the exhibition benefit the library’s work supporting regional artists and cultural and educational programs in the community.
