As guests of the Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Midsummer’s Night Party sat down to dinner at Gedney Farm on Thursday, Aug. 9, gala co-chair Carol Solomon welcomed the sold-out crowd and expressed her gratitude at the great turnout. Attendance had exceeded expectations, she said. But exceeding expectations is something that VIM Berkshires does every day. The nonprofit organization is comprised of healthcare professionals, many of them retired, who volunteer their time and expertise to help local patients who are uninsured or under-insured. They provide a range of services, including dental, optometry and nutrition. Their mental health counselors literally save lives, as two patients attested in a short video screened during dinner. “They restored my faith in humanity,” and “I feel like a different person now” were other common refrains from current and former VIM patients. Proceeds from the evening benefit VIM’s holistic approach to healthcare in the Berkshires and nearby New York and Connecticut.
