The Sharon Audubon Center is offering a Birding for Beginners course on April 25, from 10am to noon, combining a learning session with an outdoor walk on the property. The event is led by center naturalist Bethany Sheffer and is designed for people who want structured, foundational instruction including identification skills, what to look for, and how to actually use what you're learning once you're outside.
Late April is well-timed for this. Spring migration through northwest Connecticut is in full swing, with warblers, thrushes, and other neotropical migrants moving through the region on their way north. The Sharon Audubon Center's 684 acres of forest, wetlands, and ponds along the Housatonic River corridor make it one of the better spots in Litchfield County to see a wide variety of species in a short distance.
The course is open to ages 16 and up, costs $20, and requires advance online registration. The terrain is accessible—flat and grassy near the center and Ford Pond, with a total walking distance of a quarter mile or less.
