“How do you let 25 years go by unrecognized?” asked Susan Wagner, founder of Equine Advocates, at the organization's 25th birthday bash on Sunday, Oct. 10 in Chatham, New York. Indeed, since 1996, Equine Advocates has been rescuing, protecting and preventing the abuse of equines. The rescue and sanctuary is home to 81 equine residents, many of whom were slaughter-bound or came from abusive situations. Now, they live out their lives in a natural environment that allows them to socialize with each other and receive lots of TLC. The birthday party began beside the paddocks at the sanctuary, where guests enjoyed cocktails and vegan hors d’oeuvres catered by Food in Motion. Then they moved to the second portion of the evening: a benefit concert featuring Max Weinberg’s Jukebox, performed with a four-piece band at PS21 just down the road. Weinberg is the iconic drummer for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and in his Jukebox program, he takes requests from audience members from a video menu of over 200 tunes. Between songs, he regaled the guests with tales of life on the road with Springsteen. In place of an intermission, a live auction raised $10,000 from a lucky and generous couple who will be the recipients of four tickets to the next Springsteen band tour, whenever and wherever that may be.
