Saturday–Sunday, July 4–5, 10am–5pm | Hudson, NY | Tickets required

Basilica Farm & Flea returns for its Summer Market on Independence Day weekend, July 4 and 5, filling Basilica Hudson's 10,000-square-foot former glue factory on the waterfront with two days of handmade goods, farm-fresh food, vintage clothing, and DIY workshops. The lineup includes a pottery-throwing demo where visitors can try the wheel themselves, racks of vintage clothing to dig through, and the kind of straightforward summer pleasures that make this market as much a hangout as a shopping trip.

Basilica co-founder Melissa Auf der Maur, who started the venue in 2010 with husband and filmmaker Tony Stone, conceived the market on Thanksgiving weekend 2013 in partnership with Bust Magazine as a direct counter-programming move against Black Friday—an alternative for people who'd rather buy one-of-a-kind handmade gifts than fight crowds at a mall. The first year drew thousands of people and proved the appetite was real; the event has run continuously since, including a virtual edition during the pandemic.

Elise McMahon, founder of the Hudson-based design studio LikeMindedObjects, has curated the market since 2017 and remains Basilica's longest-standing program collaborator — McMahon has described the underlying philosophy plainly: building community resilience by putting money in the pockets of small, independent businesses rather than big-box corporations.

Vendors are required to uphold what the market has long called its "no bar code" ethos—independent artists, designers, food purveyors, and collectors of high-quality vintage goods only, no resold or mass-manufactured merchandise. The building itself, a circa-1880s industrial space that started as a forge and foundry for steel railway wheels before later housing a glue factory, gives the market a scale and atmosphere that's hard to replicate.

This is the second of what's now an annual three-market season, following May's Spring Market and preceding the Holiday Market in late November. The full vendor list is posted on Basilica's site for anyone who wants to plan their shopping in advance.
