Saturday, May 2, 2–3pm | Staatsburg, NY

Kentucky Derby day falls on May 2 this year, and Staatsburgh State Historic Site is marking it with a fascinator-making workshop, a fitting activity for a Gilded Age mansion where elaborate headwear would have been entirely at home. All materials are provided, along with light refreshments, and you leave with something to wear for the afternoon's race.

Fascinators, the small, sculptural hat-adjacent ornaments that perch on the side of the head, became Derby staples partly by association with British Royal Ascot traditions, where they're practically required dress.

Staatsburgh itself is the Mills Mansion, a 79-room Beaux-Arts house on the Hudson that belonged to Ogden and Ruth Livingston Mills and served as a partial inspiration for Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth.

Tickets are $12 for members and $12 plus an Eventbrite fee for non-members. Registration required in advance.
