Leave it to the young(er) folks to take us out of our COVID doldrums. The Norman Rockwell Museum, which already offers a robust lineup of virtual activities, invites all of us to a Sip, Sketch and Socialize fundraiser that was cooked up by the NRM Junior Leadership Council. On May 29, from 5:30-7 p.m., the Zoom party will include a cocktail experience, a sketching session with a renowned illustrator, and opportunity to screen socialize with others in the Zoom room.
The Junior Leadership Council is a “relatively new advisory group,” says Communications Manager Alyssa Stuble. Its mission is to reach a younger demographic, but for this event, the group took on more than that.
“We wanted to do something on a more national base that we haven’t done before.” Stuble says, “We felt it was important to have an event that was ‘pay what you will,’ and also have something tangible at the end of it.”
Working with Kelly’s Package Store in Dalton, Mass., the Council has planned a cocktail mixing session at the top of the hour. When we spoke with Stuble, the exact concoction hadn’t been determined yet, but it’ll likely be something with Coke — that was Rockwell’s favorite beverage. The cocktail will be followed by a session led by Chuck Pyle, director of the School of Illustration at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and an illustrator with a long and prominent career (he’s also a member of the Rockwell Museum’s national council). Pyle will talk attendees through drawing the human form in about 20 minutes and will give feedback to participants.
All you need to get into the spirit are your favorite cocktail and nosh, and then paper and pencil for sketching. You’re encouraged to get into cocktail attire, too — and at this point who doesn’t relish an opportunity to spiff up just a bit?
Reservations are necessary, and while donations are not required, this is a fundraiser and contributions will go to sustaining The Virtual Museum and eventually a dynamic reopening. Once you register, the cocktail recipe will be divulged and you can get the ingredients ready to go.
