May 7–June 7 | Kent, CT
Peggy Mercury, the hybrid boutique and gallery at Kent Barns, opens "Homesick," a solo exhibition of watercolor still lifes by Minneapolis-based artist Joshua Huyser. The show runs through June 7.
Huyser was born and raised in Montana, received his MFA from the University of Iowa, and has lived and worked in Minneapolis since 2005, where he also works in the film industry. His paintings, typically singular everyday objects rendered with meticulous attention to light, color, and surface, have been shown in Milan, London, and Marseille, and his work is held in public and private collections internationally.
The "Homesick" works are intimate in scale and subject: household objects, the kind of things you might not notice until they're gone. Huyser is specifically interested in what watercolor does that no other medium can: the way pigment moves and settles into the fibers of the paper, producing effects that are partly controlled and partly not.
Peggy Mercury was founded by James Boehmer and Gregory Fricke. Boehmer is a makeup artist and former global artistic director for Shiseido, and Frickeis a scout for some of the most renowned modeling agencies in the world. Peggy Mercury operates as part gallery, part curated boutique, and has been building a reputation for adventurous programming since opening.
