Beer, the Pilgrims, and America's 250th

The Minor Memorial Library in Roxbury hosts Em Sauter on July 22 for an illustrated presentation on beer and American history, timed to the country's 250th anniversary. The evening includes a tasting for attendees over 21.

Sauter is a Connecticut-based cartoonist, author, and Advanced Cicerone—one of the most rigorous beer certifications in the industry—who founded Pints and Panels in 2010 as a platform for visual drinks education. She has written four books on beer and is currently working on a fifth tome, this one on whiskey.

The presentation covers everything from the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock—according to the historical record, partly because they were running low on beer—through the colonial tavern culture that shaped early American civic life, Prohibition, and the modern craft brewing movement. The connective thread is real: beer and brewing have been present at nearly every major inflection point in American history.
