The Litchfield Historical Society leads “Stories to Keep You Up at Night,” a lantern tour of the violent and scandalous side of Litchfield’s history, this Friday evening. Guests gather at Tapping Reeve Meadow for historically inspired cocktails and treats, then pick up lanterns and head into the dark to hear what the society calls the town’s “most frightening and gruesome true stories.” The tour is for adults 21 and over.
Litchfield’s record offers plenty of material. Gallows Lane is named for the executions held there, and in February 1780 a young man named Barnett Davenport broke into the Mallory home and killed three members of the family. He was tried in Litchfield, then the county seat, with Declaration of Independence signer Roger Sherman presiding.
Space is limited, and registration is required.
