Thursday, October 29, 7pm (doors and bar at 6pm) | Winsted, CT
The American Mural Project and Hartford’s Real Art Ways show the 1925 silent film The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney, with a live score by Donald Sosin and Joanna Seaton. Sosin plays piano and organ. Seaton provides sound effects and sings three excerpts from Gounod’s “Faust,” the opera staged within the film. The pair have performed the score internationally, including a recent date at the American Film Institute’s theater in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Rupert Julian directed the film, which follows a disfigured recluse who lives beneath the Paris Opera and terrorizes the company in order to launch a young soprano, Christine, whom he then abducts. Chaney devised his own makeup for the role, and the studio kept it secret until the premiere. The film turned 100 last year and is considered a cornerstone of the horror genre.
The screening is the second in a partnership between AMP and Real Art Ways that began after the closure of downtown Winsted’s Gilson Cinema. It follows a showing of 9 to 5. General admission is $20 and members of either organization pay $15, plus fees online. AMP’s café opens for the screening with movie snacks, beer, wine, and themed drinks, and parking on site is free. Seating is limited, and the center recommends buying tickets in advance.
