Saturday, October 3, 2–6pm (rain date Sunday, October 4) | Ghent, NY
"Fashion Show on the Farm" brings designer Neville Wisdom's new collection, "GEORGE," to The Seed House in Ghent on October 3, a fundraiser for the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library. Doors open at 2pm for a farm tour and food and drink, the show runs 3 to 4:30pm on an outdoor catwalk, and a DJ dance party follows the auction.
Wisdom is the head designer of Neville Wisdom Design Studio in New Haven, Connecticut. Born in rural Saint Mary Parish, Jamaica, he started designing at fifteen, learning from a local tailor, and is mostly self-taught. He moved to Connecticut in 2000 and trained as a surgical technician before turning to fashion, opening a storefront in 2008. His label is known for architectural, constructed garments. He has curated New Haven's annual Project STYLE Fashion Show, which raises money to fight homelessness, for nine years.
The Palestine Heirloom Seed Library was founded in 2014 by Vivien Sansour, a Palestinian artist and writer born in Jerusalem and raised in Bethlehem and later North Carolina, after she returned home from years away and went looking for seeds and crop varieties she remembered from childhood. The library works to save heirloom and threatened Palestinian seed varieties along with the farming practices and stories tied to them, and now operates a Seed Protectors network of partner farms across the U.S. growing Palestinian varieties as a kind of cultural backup.
All Wisdom pieces will be sold after the show, with proceeds going to the seed library's seed preservation and storytelling work. Food and drink are available for purchase, with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages donated by sponsors Wild Arc Farms and Yesfolk Kombucha. Other sponsors are Dar Lafi Olive Oil and Domaine Kassis Winery.
The event is for all ages, and the dress code calls for something funky that expresses your true self, with sneakers or boots recommended for the terrain. Parking is limited in the rural area, and the organizers will email directions. The rain date is Sunday, October 4, same time.
The Seed House, 306 County Route 21C, Ghent, NY. Tickets at eventbrite.com.
